The population of Dhaka, one of the mega cities in the world, has already exceeded 10.0 million. Against the huge demand for daily commuting of such a huge
population, inadequate infrastructure and means of transportation has been creating ever-increasing traffic jam daily which contributes to economic
stagnancy and environmental pollution. 20-year Strategic Transport Plan (STP) developed in 2005 recommended for 6 (six) public transport modes (3
bus-basedmodes and 3 rail-basedmodes).
Basing on the recommendations of the STP and considering the excessive commuting in the North-South route in Dhaka city , Asian Development Bank
(ADB) conducted a preliminary study for implementation of the 1st phase of BRT Route – 3. As it found feasible, a new project has been undertaken
under the Ministry of Communication namely “Greater Dhaka Sustainable Urban Transport Project (BRT, Gaspar – Airport)” which was approved in the
ECNEC meeting held on 20/11/2012. The main objective of the project is to introduce a fast, safe and eco-friendly public transportation system between
Dhaka and Gazipur-Tongi-Uttara areas through implementing and operating a 20 kilometer dedicated bus rapid transit (BRT) system. The project will jointly
be implemented by Roads & Highways Directorate (RHD), Bangladesh Bridge Authority (BBA) and Local Government Engineering Department (LGED).
If implemented, BRT, Gazipur – Airport project, will be the first public transport system in Dhaka city, which will commute a maximum of 40,000 passengers per
hour. The operation, management and maintenance of the BRT route will be done by Dhaka Bus Rapid Transit Company Ltd. (Dhaka BRT), a 100% Govt.-owned company.
